Parents-Teachers Conference

May 31, 2008 - Historically, both the Parents Association and Teachers Association have always been working together to improve school functions. However, past communications have been limited, so in order to provide a formal platform and openly discuss how and what the students are learning, they organized the first ever, Parents and Teachers Conference on May 31, 2008 which was considered an overwheming success.

One important point brought up was the how the education for children does not end at the school - the education begins in the home with the families' participation. Teachers offered suggestions to the Parents on how to preserve the culture in the home, so that practicing language and culture becomes a continuous day-to-day routine rather than a once-a-week learning session. Parents were encouraged to participate not only at home, but also at the school with the simple logic that a better school will attract more students which will in turn support the Tibetan Community as a whole in preserving the dwindling Tibetan culture.

Parents on the other hand, are frustrated with the perception they feel many Tibetans in the local community have with the Tibetan School. Dorjee Tsering, president of the Parents Association said, "Many Tibetans parents think we are wasting time, and that the Tibetan School is not really doing much to help teach students, or they place other priorities in front of their child's education. We want to show them that this is a truly worthwhile effort, and that what the kids are learning will help them for a lifetime in their self-identificaion as a Tibetan and being part of a community. Hopefully, more and more parents will become interested and see that we are functioning as a real school with a purpose."
